What skincare products are actually worth using?

Accepted Answer

You don’t need a ten-step routine. For most people, a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer that works for your skin, and daily sunscreen are a very good place to start. What you add from there should depend on your skin and what you’re trying to address. If you bring your products to an appointment, we’re happy to help you sort through them.

Do I really need sunscreen every day?

Yes, even when you’re not headed to the pool. Daily sun protection helps reduce your risk of skin cancer and prevents some of the premature aging caused by UV exposure. Choose broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and make it part of your morning routine.

Question 4

What sunscreen should I use?

Accepted Answer

Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Mineral and chemical sunscreens both work, so the best one is usually the one you like enough to wear every day. If your skin is sensitive, a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may be a better fit. And if you want a specific recommendation, ask us at your next visit!

Do I need a retinol?

Maybe. Retinol and prescription retinoids can help with acne, uneven pigmentation, and fine lines, but they aren’t right for every skin type. If your skin is very dry, irritated, or prone to redness, adding one without a plan can make matters worse. We can help you decide whether a retinoid makes sense for your skin and how to use it without irritating your face.

How often should I have a skin check?

There isn’t one schedule that’s right for everyone. How often you need a full-body skin exam depends on things like your personal and family history, previous skin cancers, and your individual risk. We’ll let you know how often you should be seen based on your skin, not a blanket rule.

Question 7

I found a new or changing spot. Should I have it checked?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you notice a spot that’s new, changing, different from the others, itching, or bleeding, it’s worth having us take a look. Skin cancers are much easier to treat when they’re caught early, so this is not the time to wait six months and see what happens. Give us a call and we’ll get you in.

What should I look for when checking my own skin?

Get familiar with what’s normal for you. When you check your skin, pay attention to anything new, changing, itching, bleeding, or simply different from the spots around it. And check the places that are easy to miss, too, including your scalp, back, feet, and nails. If something catches your attention, let us take a look.

I’ve never had a full-body skin exam. What should I expect?

A full-body skin exam is exactly what it sounds like: a careful look at your skin from head to toe, including areas you may not be able to see easily yourself. If we find something concerning, we’ll explain what we see and what we recommend next. If a spot needs to be biopsied, that may be done during the visit.

Can teenagers come in for acne?

Absolutely! Acne is one of the most common reasons younger patients see us, and there’s no reason to wait until it becomes severe or starts to scar. We’ll look at what’s going on, talk through treatment options, and build a plan that’s realistic to follow. Acne takes time to treat, but the right treatment can help get it under control and reduce the chance of scarring.

When is acne bad enough to see a dermatologist?

Whether an adult or teen, you don’t have to wait until it’s “bad enough.” If over-the-counter products aren’t helping, breakouts are painful or leaving marks, or acne is bothering you, come see us. There are more treatment options than what you’ll find in the skincare aisle, and we can help figure out what makes sense for your skin.

Can I ask about more than one skin concern at my appointment?

Of course! If you came in for a rash but also have a mole you’ve been wondering about, tell us. We want to know what’s concerning you. Depending on what’s going on, some things may need their own follow-up, but you never need to wonder whether you’re “allowed” to ask.

What can I do to look younger?

Accepted Answer

Start with sunscreen. Daily sun protection is one of the most useful things you can do to prevent premature skin aging. From there, the right approach depends on what bothers you. Fine lines, texture, discoloration, and volume loss aren’t all treated the same way. Sometimes a good skincare routine is enough. Sometimes a treatment like Botox or SkinPen makes sense. We’d rather talk about your skin and your goals before recommending anything.

Is it too early to start Botox?

There isn’t a magic age when you’re supposed to start Botox. Whether it makes sense has more to do with your skin, the lines you’re noticing, and what you want to change. If you’re curious, come talk to Julie. She’ll tell you what she recommends, including when the answer is to leave something alone.

Will cosmetic treatments make me look overdone?

Not here. Julie’s approach is tailored to your aesthetic goals. The intention is for you to look like yourself, not like you had something done. Every cosmetic visit starts with a conversation and a full assessment, and if a treatment isn’t right for you, we’ll tell you.

I’m interested in cosmetic treatment, but I’m not sure what I need. Where do I start?

Start with a conversation. Tell us what you’ve noticed or what you’d like to improve, and Julie will talk through what makes sense for you. You don’t need to know whether you need Botox, SkinPen, or something else before you come in. And if the best answer is to leave something alone, she’ll tell you that too.
